San Francisco SPCA
A bright, welcoming reimagining of the San Francisco SPCA campus that blends adaptive reuse, daylight, and thoughtfully integrated architectural lighting to create a healthy, transparent environment for animals, staff, and the community.
The renovation of the San Francisco SPCA transforms an industrial warehouse structure into a light-filled, community-centered animal care facility. Exposed timber trusses, skylights, and high ceilings establish an open, loft-like character—celebrating the building’s structure while fostering a sense of warmth and approachability.
Lighting design was developed to support both operational performance and animal well-being. Suspended luminous rings and evenly distributed ambient systems provide soft, uniform illumination across adoption areas and circulation zones, minimizing glare and harsh contrast. Integrated daylight from skylights is balanced with efficient electric lighting to maintain consistent visual comfort throughout the day.
In public-facing areas, illumination reinforces transparency and trust—enhancing visibility into dog parks, adoption rooms, and support spaces while highlighting clear wayfinding and branded elements. Acoustic ceiling panels and carefully coordinated fixtures reduce visual clutter overhead, preserving the architectural rhythm of exposed trusses and mechanical systems.
The result is a humane, energy-efficient environment that supports care, connection, and community—where lighting enhances both the architectural experience and the mission of animal advocacy.
